"The Mourning Veil"
This sculptural piece, with its distinct Victorian flair, offers a unique way to display a light or large plant, such as a fern. It's crafted using a captivating mix of wire, gypsum, cardboard, pulp, fabric, acrylic, and glaze, creating a rich texture and form. By layering these textured pastes over structural wire frames and draped fabric, I mimic the slow, calcifying process of nature.
The three-dimensional design, measuring 80x45cm, makes a striking statement in any space.
It is designed not just to occupy space, but to interact with it ;- acting as porous conduits for light and shadow, or as protective shrouds for organic life. I seek to evoke a sense of quiet history, inviting the viewer to contemplate what remains when time strips away the excess. This piece honors the raw unpredictability of the curing process:- embracing shifting tensions, cracks, and imperfections as vital elements of the final form.
